Oh, My Soul...

Whether or not music is a big part of your life, i think we can all resonate with the idea that music holds power. So much power, that sometimes we don't even know what to do with ourselves. For me, I grew up in a household that revered music. My mom is a pianist, has been since the age of 4, and is now a therapeutic musician. My father directs and produces videos, so he is also aware of how important a soundtrack can be (that's actually how my parents met... *cue the "awwws"). So pretty much, its safe to say music has always been a very important part of my life.

When it comes to anxiety, I'm always searching for new ways to cope and deal with my personal demons. You can never have too many tools in your toolkit. Recently, I've been even more engulfed in my love for music, and I've been using it to deal with obstacles I find on my path. One of my favorite feelings is finding a song that just echoes within every cell in my body. Seriously, there's nothing like hearing a chorus or bridge that just hits home. Sometimes I'm feeling so sh*tty that I can't even find the words the emotions that are fumbling about in my brain, and finding a song that somehow manages to put those feelings into words is pure magic. So today, I thought I'd share with you a few of my go- to songs that help to put me in a good place, especially when I can't find it on my own.

Disclaimer: (The songs to follow are in no specific order).

1. Sinking Friendships by Jónsi

I first heard this song when watching the move "We Bought a Zoo", and it is absolutely s t u n n i n g. I love it not for its lyrics, but for the instrumental component to it. I don't even know how to describe it. The right combination of notes in this song create such a powerful energy that makes you feel safe. There is a physical resonance that, what I would imagine, is what God placing his hand on your back and saying "I've got you" feels like. Its so moving that it genuinely feels like stardust and love, mixed to perfection. I would definitely check this one out.

2. In The Meantime by Jess Ray

When I listen to this song, the main message I get from it is that things may seem incredibly confounding and hurtful at times, but that's a part of life and you can't do anything but accept it. Accepting this will you bring closer to peace. My mom always tells me that no matter how much I'm hurting, feeling my feelings and not fighting the pain is the most important thing to do. That's the only way to healthily work through whatever is causing you distress, This song reminds me to remember that those that love me will help me through whatever I'm dealing with, and if I'm hurting so badly that I can't carry myself, they will do it for me.

3. Oh, My Soul by Casting Crowns

Okay, hear me out on this one. I found this while searching for a song to use in a fiction story i had to write in my creative writing class. The story was about a girl with anxiety (wow, what a new topic for me!) and I needed to find a song that would help her move through her struggles. I literally searched "songs that help with anxiety", and after sifting through a bunch of results, I found this one. LET ME TELL YOU... if you have ever suffered from anxiety or anything similar...even if it was just one time...the lyrics in this song describe the feeling perfectly. I know we all feel anxiety differently, but there is an overall component we can all relate to. This song captures that feeling with flying colors. Once you hit the chorus, a religious aspect seems to appear.I don't typically like religious songs, but the song is so good that its easy to look past if thats not your thing (and thats not my thing).

4. What Would I Do Without You by Drew Holcomb &The Neighbors

I love all these songs, but man do I really love this song. The whole thing, from lyrics to the actual music, is so incredibly calming. It starts off with the strumming of a guitar and it immediately makes me happy. Its a love song, but honestly it reminds me of my mom. Its a song about how this mans wife never fails to lift him up when hes fallen. My mom has always been that person for me, so even though the circumstances are very different, I can relate. We all have our people, and we all know how much of an impact our people make on our lives. So this ones to you, mom.

5. Beautiful Rose by Sean McConnell

This is such a good song to listen to when you need to be reminded that all the pain and discomfort is temporary. Sometimes, when we're in the middle of a really rough time, its difficult to look for the light at the end of the tunnel. And even if we try to see the silver lining, sometimes our minds are so foggy that we can't. This song reminds you that life may not always look like what we had hoped it would be, or what we planned it like, but that doesn't mean the future wont hold everything you've ever wanted and more. Let yourself remember that you don't know as much as you think you do, and that's a good thing. There are so many sunrises yet to be seen, so much laughter to be heard, and endless kindness to witness. Don't give up because the thorns hurt, instead be grateful for the beauty to be seen in the rose.
